Positive Effects of music
Young and old are influenced by music; music is a part of our everyday lives. One of the first
songs I remember hearing were hymns and primary songs from church. I was always
able to feel at peace when listening to them. As I remember them the first song
that comes to mind is “Love at Home.” It was and is the truth and has always made me happy. LDS church music has been a
big role of mine. I have been the music director in my church relief society,
performed musical numbers with my voice, violin and the piano, and been in my
church stake and ward choirs. In times of comfort and compassion I have sung
for funerals, as well as for joyous occasions such as baptisms. At the start of fourth grade I was able to finally be a member of orchestra. I had always wanted to play the violin. I got the chance and played every year throughout high school. In school I was able to listen to beautiful concerts and enjoy bands and other orchestras when the high schools had competitions. One of my great friends from orchestra, Lindsey said, “Being able to travel and compete with other orchestras I guess[sic]” were positive experiences for her (Burns). She also mentioned to me, “Ya over the years I have started listening to more music and find myself paying more attention to when the song is saying the meaning behind the words. I have found that it has related so much to my life and what I have been through in the past several years. I’m able to express how I feel through music I listen to[sic]” (Burns). The music we learned to play in school was not only educational, but fun. There were times when it was familiar to many of us. The most recognizable song I remember playing was the collection of songs from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Music is a love of my life. It is also a love for a special person in my life, my best friend Anthony. “Music has pulled me out of depression more than once, especially Keith Urban. I have suffered a lot over the last 5 years: a broken heart and a loss of the best friend, plus playing the drums is good exercise and playing the guitar is good for exercising my brain[sic]” is just one thing that Anthony had mentioned to me (Armenta). Another thing he said was, “Taking my 9 year old to see mine and her hero[sic]” (Armenta). These were positive experiences that he has had with music. The last thing he said was speaking of the Keith Urban concert. The country music concert just happened at the USANA amphitheatre. Anthony could not have been happier because he was able to meet his hero, Keith Urban. He finally told me, “By the way, music has always been a better outlet then turning to drugs” (Armenta). That is a point right there! One of the funnest experiences I have had is going to Guitar Center with Anthony and watching him be so happy. He loves playing with the guitars and the drums. Whenever I am able to go with him, I know he is happy. One big change in his life that I’ve seen as a positive influence is the grunge band that he is in. He is the drummer of the band called “Outside of Society.” The first time I was able to see him perform was this past Wednesday. He and his two bandmates did a brilliant job!
Not all music has positive affects. Classical music however, is one piece of music that most often has helpful effects. These are just some ways it can help: “Pain relief, reducing blood pressure, Medicine for the heart, speeds post-stroke recovery, chronic headaches and migraine remedy, as well Music boosts immunity” (“How”)! Each of these effects I believe are very true. Listening to music when I myself am depressed helps me to feel better. When I am extremely emotional, music calms my heart and sometimes my migraines; the music needs to be very soft and slow. Love melodies or Disney tunes are my favorite to listen to as I sleep.
Another great effect of music is the help that it gives to the brain. “Music enhances intelligence, learning and IQ, music improves memory performance, music improves concentration and attention, music improves physical performance, athletic performance, music improves body movement and coordination, music helps to work more productively, music reduces stress and aids relaxation, and music improves mood and decreases depression” (“How”). Each and every one of the reasons music helps the brain has impacted me through my life--especially helping with my depression. Music brings a light into my life that I don’t know what I’d do without.
“ Many people like to listen to music while they work…Whilst there may be many reasons for wishing to listen to music in the workplace, it really improves your productivity” (“How”). I work with money in the early mornings and get through by listening to music and singing. I know that to just get through the day Lindsey will listen to music. Anthony loves to play on his guitar after work and whenever he can. By doing so it helps him write and get his emotions out. Music gives positive vibes to help not only myself and my friends, but many people get through each day. Music is part of everything that I love and is close to my heart. Music is the key to my heart- my happiness.
